We, as the growing family of Prolinnova in 20 countries, join hands to offer hearty congratulations to Yang Saing Koma of Cambodia on receiving the prestigious Ramon Magsayay Award for 2012. Congratulations are also extended to the team at CEDAC Cambodia, who are committed to serving the smallholder farming communities of their country.
Koma, as he is known to many of us, is the Country Programme Coordinator and visionary leader of Prolinnova-Cambodia. He has been recognised for his untiring efforts and inspiring leadership, and – as aptly summarised by the Award Foundation – for “his creative fusion of practical science and collective will that has inspired and enabled vast numbers of farmers in Cambodia to become more empowered and productive contributors to their country’s economic growth.”
Koma has been in the forefront of promoting farmer innovation and farmer-led experimentation and sharing. This is an approach to agricultural research and development that binds the Prolinnova community of practice together. Koma’s vision in using this approach to enable farmers to become researchers in their own right and to adapt new practices such as SRI to their own conditions has had significant impact on productivity and on the lives of family farmers in Cambodia.
We in the Prolinnova family have been inspired by the integrity, modesty, kindness, passion and commitment of Koma and look forward to a long and fruitful partnership in the Prolinnova community of practice. We wish him and the team at CEDAC all the best in their journey towards empowering all family farmers in Cambodia.
