In 2005, the regional network Prolinnova–Andes (Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador) was created with the aims of promoting farmer innovation processes and exchanging experiences in participatory innovation development (PID). Since then, regional- and national-level activities to promote local innovation were carried out, i.e., two regional workshops (in 2005 and 2008), Field Day for Local Innovators in Bolivia (July 2008) and an International Seminar on Participatory Methodological Processes (Peru, May 2008), among others.
However, from 2011 to 2013, Prolinnova–Andes did not develop more activities, mainly because of a lack of funds. In April 2014, Prolinnova–Bolivia members met and decided to continue with Prolinnova activities at country level. The aim of Prolinnova–Bolivia is to recognise the value of local knowledge and the innovative capacity of smallholder farmers to fill knowledge gaps, create technologies appropriate to their reality, and contribute to agricultural development and natural resource management. Prolinnova–Bolivia seeks to become a platform that can articulate the views of different public and private actors to promote dialogue between local and scientific knowledge, learn through exchange with other Prolinnova Country Platforms and contribute to achieving wider recognition of and support to local innovation by stakeholders in agricultural and rural development in Bolivia.
Prolinnova–Bolivia defines itself as a national network including eight institutions and local organisations: the non-governmental development organisations PRODII (Interdisciplinary Integrated Development Program), (coordinating NGO), PROSUCO (Promotion of Sustainability and Shared Knowledge), Vecinos Mundiales (World Neighbors), Agrecol Andes Foundation and Santa Vera Cruz Parish Church; the farmer organisations Female Farmers “New Seed” and Yapuchiris–FUNAPA; and the research institute PROINPA Foundation (Research on and Promotion of Andean Products) – and three very engaged individuals.
