Prolinnova farmers speak at international Tropentag conference in Prague

Two farmers in the Prolinnova network were panellists in the opening plenary session of the Tropentag 2022 (TT22) held in Prague, Czech Republic, on 15–18 September 2022: Rebecca Dero, farmer innovator from Kenya, and Elisabeth Mpofu, member of the Prolinnova Oversight Group (POG) in the seat for farmer organisations. They brought in their views as farmers about agroecology as the only way to feed the world in a sustainable way.

The “Tropentag” (German for “Tropical Day”) is an annual international conference on research in tropical and subtropical agriculture and rural development. It is organised by several universities in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic jointly with the German Council for Tropical and Subtropical Research (ATSAF). It addresses development-oriented research on issues in crop and animal agriculture, fisheries, forestry, natural resource management, food security and nutrition. It brings together students, scientists, development practitioners and donors. TT22 was organised by the Faculty of Tropical AgriSciences at the Czech University of Life Sciences with the theme “Can agroecological farming feed the world? Farmers’ and academia’s views”. It offered recent research results in plenary discussions, thematic sessions, guided poster tours and workshops and also featured a film festival “Perspectives on Pastoralism”.

At a conference booth set up at TT22, numerous policy briefs based on experiences of the Prolinnova network were made available to the conference participants.
