Jony Jos, India: farmer in Prolinnova Oversight Group
The Prolinnova Oversight Group (POG) would like to announce that Jony Jos, a small-scale farmer from Tripunithura in Kerala State, India, has taken on the role of representing farmer organisations (FOs) in the POG starting from 1 December 2023. He is successor to Elizabeth Mpofu, founder and former chairperson of the Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers Forum (ZIMSOFF), who was a POG member in 2022–23. The POG thanks Elizabeth for her service.
Jony specialises in cultivating paddy, bananas and vegetables. His farming techniques have been greatly influenced by the principles advocated in Low-External-Input and Sustainable Agriculture (LEISA), a magazine published in India – a legacy of the information centre for LEISA that started in the Netherlands in the 1980s (see https://prolinnova.net/ileia-and-compas-publications-now-online). With a longstanding commitment to the collaborative development of agricultural technologies involving multiple stakeholders, Jony has emerged as a pivotal figure in this domain.
As an active member of Nellulpadaka Samithy, a collective of paddy farmers, Jony is deeply involved in working with various farmer groups and NGOs. As a volunteer advisor, he contributes to improving farming practices, value-chain development and marketing strategies related to paddy and vegetables. His specialisation covers all aspects of the paddy-to-rice value chain, in which he mentors FOs, aiming to promote sustainable paddy cultivation and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through local initiatives.
Jony graduated in agriculture with a specialisation in horticulture from Allahabad Agricultural Institute, Allahabad University. In 1987, he started working with the Department of Agriculture, Government of Kerala, as an agricultural officer. He gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management & Agri-Warehouse Management and certificates in Food Safety and Quality Management, as well as Sustainability Management. Throughout his service with the government and at Auroville, Tamil Nadu, Jony has honed his expertise in agricultural advisory work and farm management. He received a State-level award for E-Governance in Service Delivery from the Institute of Management in Government (IMG) for E-enabling paddy procurement and distribution. Since his retirement in 2021, Jony focuses on farming.
With his unique background, Jony can bring valuable insights to the POG. His experience as a full-time small-scale farmer, combined with his past role in government service, positions him well to contribute from both perspectives. Jony aims to play a crucial role in devising strategies to institutionalise the participatory innovation development (PID) approach within FOs and government advisory services. His ability to bridge these two realms can enhance the integration of PID into both.

Le Groupe de Supervision Prolinnova (POG) souhaite annoncer que Jony Jos, un paysan de Tripunithura dans l’État du Kerala, en Inde, a pris en charge le rôle de représentant des organisations paysannes (OPs) au sein du POG à compter du 1er décembre 2023. Il succède à Elizabeth Mpofu, fondatrice et ancienne présidente du Zimbabwe Smallholder Organic Farmers Forum (ZIMSOFF), qui a été membre du POG en 2022-23. Le POG remercie Elizabeth pour ses services.
Jony est spécialisé dans la culture du riz, des bananes et des légumes. Engagé de longue date dans le développement collaboratif de technologies agricoles impliquant de multiples acteurs, Jony s’est imposé comme une figure centrale dans ce domaine.
En tant que membre actif de Nellulpadaka Samithy, un collectif de cultivateurs de riz, Jony est très impliqué dans la collaboration avec divers groupes paysans et ONGs. En tant que conseiller volontaire, il contribue à l’amélioration des pratiques agricoles, au développement de la chaîne de valeur et aux stratégies de commercialisation du riz et des légumes. Sa spécialisation couvre tous les aspects de la chaîne de valeur du paddy au riz, dans laquelle il encadre les OPs, dans le but de promouvoir la culture durable du paddy et d’atteindre les Objectifs de Développement Durable (SDGs) par le biais d’initiatives locales.
Jony est diplômé en agriculture avec une spécialisation en horticulture de l’Institut agricole d’Allahabad, Université d’Allahabad. En 1987, il a commencé à travailler au Département de l’agriculture du Gouvernement du Kerala, en tant qu’agent agricole. Il a obtenu un diplôme d’études supérieures en gestion du personnel et en gestion des entrepôts agricoles, ainsi que des certificats en sécurité alimentaire et en gestion de la qualité, ainsi qu’en gestion de la durabilité. Tout au long de son service au sein du gouvernement et à Auroville, Tamil Nadu, Jony a perfectionné son expertise en matière de conseil agricole et de gestion des exploitations. L’Institute of Management in Government (IMG) lui a décerné un prix d’État pour la gouvernance électronique dans la prestation de services, pour avoir permis l’achat et la distribution de paddy par voie électronique. Depuis sa retraite en 2021, Jony se consacre à l’agriculture.
Grâce à son profil unique, Jony peut apporter des informations précieuses au POG. Son expérience en tant que paysan à plein temps, combinée à son rôle passé dans le service gouvernemental, le place en bonne position pour contribuer des deux points de vue. Jony entend jouer un rôle crucial dans l’élaboration de stratégies visant à institutionnaliser l’approche du développement participatif de l’innovation (DPI) au sein des organisations agricoles et des services de conseil du gouvernement. Sa capacité à faire le lien entre ces deux domaines peut favoriser l’intégration de l’approche PID au sein de ceux-ci.
